Hudson's Bay Company — Rare 1870 one-pound sterling promissory note issued at Fort Garry, numbered No. 903. A scarce and highly desirable Hudson’s Bay Company bill of exchange, representing a later emission associated with the expansion of HBC financial operations into the Red River Settlement during a pivotal transitional period in Western Canadian history. The note is fully issued with manuscript signatures, period endorsements, and an attractive Fort Garry dateline. Of particular historical significance is the circular Fort Garry transit/receiving handstamp dated May 1870, closely coinciding with the turbulent Red River period and the transfer of Rupert’s Land to the Dominion of Canada. Such markings considerably enhance both the historical appeal and collectability of the piece. Condition is consistent with circulation, showing moderate wear, folds, creasing, and several small edge tears, yet the note remains entirely legible with strong eye appeal and pleasing overall preservation for the issue. An increasingly elusive and important early Western Canadian financial instrument from one of the most iconic institutions in Canadian history.
