The Bank of Toronto; 1859 $5 #54232 CH-715-14-08 w/No Oveprint. Legacy Currency Grading Very Good-10 minor issue. A compelling and historically significant rarity, this 1859 $5 note from The Bank of Toronto is accompanied by a remarkable provenance. An engaging account by W.G. Burleigh, titled “A Unique Canadian Bookmark,” recounts the note’s discovery: in 1977, a Brampton, Ontario couple acquired an antique Victorian vanity. During restoration, a concealed compartment revealed a small cache including gold Sovereigns, an 1878 $2 note, and the present Bank of Toronto issue. The note itself is visually attractive for the assigned grade, retaining full design integrity and clear printed detail. Moderate circulation wear is evident, consistent with the VG-10 designation, along with a couple of tiny pinholes noted for accuracy. Despite these minor impairments, the overall eye appeal remains strong for a note of this vintage and rarity. Of particular importance is its extraordinary scarcity. It is the sole example recorded in The Canadian Paper Money Society Note Registry, Volume 1, and no additional specimens have been confirmed in the decades since. Supporting this status is original correspondence dated 1977 and 1990 from the Chief Curator of the Bank of Canada, explicitly identifying this note as the only known example at that time. Our research indicates that no further examples have surfaced since. Further enhancing its significance, accompanying documentation also records expressed interest from the Smithsonian Institution regarding potential acquisition as part of a donation, underscoring the note’s institutional-level importance. An excessively rare and desirable piece of Canadian chartered banknote history, combining unique status, documented provenance, and compelling narrative appeal. Opportunities to acquire material of this caliber are exceedingly limited. A premium offering, and a centerpiece candidate for advanced collections.

The Bank of Toronto 1890 $5 #242618 CH-715-22-02a O/P "BARRIE" Legacy Currency Grading Choice Fine-15. An exceedingly rare overprint, this note represents one of the most sought-after items from The Bank of Toronto series. The “BARRIE” overprint is particularly scarce, and very few examples have surfaced in collectible markets. The condition of this note places it among the finest known examples of this type, making it a highlight for serious collectors of early Canadian currency. This may well be your only opportunity to acquire this historic and iconic note.
