Indian Treaty Medal; 187_ NGC Choice Mint State-63 Bronze issue struck to commem...

Indian Treaty Medal; 187_ NGC Choice Mint State-63 Bronze issue struck to commemorate the numbered treaties agreed by First Nations and the British Crown between 1871 and 1921. It was deemed protocol to give medals and other gifts to Indigenous chiefs who had taken part in negotiations acknowledging their role and serving as a tangible reminder of the agreement. This particular example is an unissued contemporary Bronze Patron medal most likely to be issued to dignitaries other than the Indian Chiefs themselves who were offered the silver examples. The exact quantity struck and issued is unknown but undoubtedly rare, and it would be fair to suggest that less than a 100 pieces exist. By J.S. & A.B. Wyon. Jamieson 38. Bronze, 76.4mm.
