Born in 1898 in Rochdale, Lancashire, he served in the Great War, joining the Police Force in Manchester. On two occasions as he was working for Armstrong-Whitworth Engineering based in Higher Openshaw, Manchester as the Fire Superintendent he intervened in heroic fashion to stop runaway horses and runaway horses/carriage in so preventing injury and or death to passerbys. For this he received the congratulations from The Directors of Armstrong-Whitworth and received a Bar to his Scout Association Silver Medal. His actions were passed onto higher authorities and the King’s Birthday Honours List published on 3rd June 1925 carried notification of the award of the Empire Gallantry Medal to him. He was presented with the medal by King George V at Buckingham Palace on 6th July 1925. An intriguing and most likely unique assembly of medals.

Militaria Medal; British - Queen's South Africa Medal with Defence of Kimberley clasp to ''PTE A.W. SAMPSON KIMBERLEY TOWN GD:'' & Kimberley Star - an unofficial private campaign medal awarded to all who took part in the defence of the diamond mining town during the four months in 1899 and 1900 while Kimberley was besieged by Boer Republican Forces during the Second Boer War. Important to note that the Queen's South Africa medal looks to be original but shows heavy acidic like fields, probably been treated or dipped in acid in the past. The importance of the pairing makes it an attractive example that should remain in the collectors realm, even with the issue. See Picture for full representation of QSA.
